Groundbreaking Solutions For A Solid Future

The Waites

Project Overview

The Waites project stands as a landmark in the ongoing revitalization of Birmingham’s Southside. Situated in the heart of the cities medical district, the project transformed what was once a collection of abandoned buildings (a former medical clinic, restaurant, and stores), into a lively hub that now features parking, residential units, retail stores, entertainment venues, and local favorites such as Encore Rogue, Taco Mama, Smoothie King, and more. This project didn’t just reshape a corner of Birmingham—it played a key role in sparking the broader renaissance of the area.

Bostic Trucking and Excavating was brought in to tackle this ambitious project, a task that demanded not just skill, but also finesse. We began with a thorough asbestos abatement, ensuring that the site was safe for the extensive demolition work that followed. The demolition itself involved taking down half a city block, totaling over 30,000 square feet of buildings, all while carefully managing the site's dense urban setting. Our team salvaged and recycled over 177,000 bricks, emphasizing our commitment to sustainability even in the midst of large-scale demolition.

Once the demolition phase was complete and the site was cleared down to its foundations, we shifted our focus to one of the project’s most critical tasks: the installation of a new, larger storm drain system. The demolition of existing foundations and retaining walls was no small feat, but it was essential for the site’s new purpose. The final stage of the project involved precise site preparation and grading, which included the export of over 5,000 yards of fill dirt, setting the stage for the new construction that would breathe life back into the Southside of Birmingham.

Project Challenges

The Waites project presented a unique set of challenges that required our team’s expertise and problem-solving abilities. The site’s urban location meant that heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic was a constant concern. Site logistics were further complicated by the close proximity of neighboring buildings and roads, making every move a calculated effort to ensure safety and efficiency. The installation of the new storm sewer system was particularly challenging due to the pipe’s proximity to a busy road where heavy, speeding vehicles added to the complexity.

Solutions

To overcome these obstacles, our team developed and executed an organized site plan that prioritized safety and efficiency. Strategic traffic control measures, including engineered sidewalk and lane closures, were put in place to create ample working room while minimizing disruption to the surrounding area. Our careful planning not only ensured the safety of our crew and the public but also kept the project on track and within the timeline.

The Impact

The completion of The Waites was more than just a successful project; it was a catalyst for change in Birmingham’s Southside. The newly revitalized space now serves as a vibrant community hub, offering residents and visitors a place to live, shop, dine, and enjoy entertainment. The project demonstrated Bostic Trucking and Excavating’s ability to handle complex urban projects with precision and care, and it stands as a testament to our role in the ongoing revitalization of Birmingham.
