Groundbreaking Solutions For A Solid Future

Foundry Yard Apartments

Project Overview

The Foundry Yards Apartments project is a shining example of how strategic demolition can pave the way for urban renewal. Located in a once-struggling industrial sector of Birmingham, this project was part of a broader wave of development that followed the creation of Railroad Park and Regions Field. The area, once defined by its industrial roots, is now blossoming into a vibrant mixed-use living and entertainment district, and the transformation of the former Merita Bread Bakery site played a crucial role in this evolution.

Project Scope:

Bostic Trucking & Excavating was tasked with demolishing the 102,000-square-foot warehouse that once housed the Merita Bread Bakery. The project began with extensive asbestos abatement to ensure the safety of the site and surrounding areas. Since the buildings remaining and those being demolished were originally part of the same structure, building separation became a critical phase of the project. Our team meticulously separated the structures, ensuring the demolition proceeded without causing any damage to the remaining buildings or disrupting nearby activities.

Project Challenges:

The demolition took place in a bustling part of the city, surrounded by heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as well as ongoing construction at neighboring sites. The proximity to popular destinations like Railroad Park and Regions Field added complexity, with unpredictable surges in traffic tied to events at both venues. The logistical challenges of working in such a high-traffic, rapidly developing area demanded careful planning and flexibility.

Additionally, preserving the adjoining structure made of fragile, old bricks required precision. The risk of damaging this structure during demolition was high, necessitating a complete separation plan before any demolition began.

Environmental Stewardship and Recycling Efforts:

At Bostic Trucking & Excavating, we take environmental responsibility seriously, and this project was no exception. Over 93% of building materials were recycled, keeping unnecessary debris out of the landfill and promoting sustainability. This included the recycling of all concrete, bricks, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. In fact, we salvaged 15,000 bricks for the project owners while self-recycling more than 271,000 bricks, demonstrating our commitment to both sustainability and the preservation of valuable materials. This effort significantly reduced waste and promoted the repurposing of materials for future projects.

Solutions and Execution:

To manage the complexities of this urban site, our team devised a flexible work schedule, performing the most disruptive tasks during non-peak times to minimize the impact on the surrounding community. Coordinating around the event schedules at Regions Field, we completed our work without causing any significant disruption. Our demolition plan ensured the precise removal of the Merita Bread Bakery site while preserving the adjacent building’s delicate structure.

The Results:

The successful demolition of the Merita Bread Bakery paved the way for the development of the Foundry Yards Apartments, a cornerstone project in Birmingham’s ongoing industrial district revitalization. Through expert site management and demolition techniques, Bostic Trucking & Excavating completed this complex project safely, on time, and within budget. Our efforts contributed to the sustainable development of the area, demonstrating our ability to handle challenging urban demolition projects while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
